I've learned (the hard way) what Sigmund needs when he does this:

No, he's not staring out the window to admire the view.

He's searching for his escape!

Seconds later he was in the backseat having, shall we say, a very EXPLOSIVE accident.

No bueno.

Note to self: this means, "LET ME OUT, LADY!"

It's difficult to decipher from his expression, but I'm certain the beach is the most joyous spot for this little pug.

The moment we're within whiffing distance he's scratching at the window, desperate to hang his head out and take in all those beach smells.

And if the car stops - look out! The split second that door opens he bolts!

I can't blame him - I sort-of feel the same way. It's something about the freedom you feel and the sense of calm you get from the wide expanse of the ocean - knowing you, and your cares, are just a speck on this great big globe.

No SUNday at the Beach!

Chasing sand... just like the leaves, Sigmund loves to run, jump and chase sand. Once it's in his mouth - he can't shake it out fast enough... but keeps going back for more.

The beach seems to be his favorite place in the world. Even before we get there, he can smell that salt in the air and starts leaning far out the window.

Once he gets those paws in the sand - it's like he's a puppy again!

Across America Redux - The Badlands are BAD!

This was Sigmund's view... stuck in the car... as usual.

Why is it National Parks discriminate against four legs?

I understand a few bad dogs can ruin it for the rest of them... but how many people don't go to National Parks because they don't want to leave their dogs in hot cars?

I just loved this barn literally in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota. The grass was just so green... and amazing contrast to the dreary sky. This is my absolute favorite picture from the entire trip. I only wish I had removed his leash.

Sigmund quickly grew accustomed to five star hotel living. Bring on the down comforter. Makes you think about your next hotel stay, doesn't it!

Across America Redux - Stuck in the car

Just a mere nine months later... we're back in the car and driving back across the country. This time PDX2NYC photog joined us for a little adventure through the upper midwest. Sigmund was quite bored by North and South Dakota.

Look at the belly!

Sigmund is such a good study buddy - he keeps me warm and keeps me company while I type away on the computer.

I think he's bored here in NYC. There's never enough time for play (although we went on a long walk this morning in Riverside Park and played ball for an hour).

Trouble is... life could be worse when I get home! Back to work means Sigmund is back to being home alone for hours on end each day. I need a second job so I can send him to doggie day care more often.

Check out what my Columbia education has allowed me to do! Play with Photoshop! We're learning all the tools to make websites and these were a couple practice projects. The "Royal" one is courtesy of a friend who went crazy with make-up and made Sigmund's nose huge! I should have told him he couldn't use Sigmund's picture!

While Sigmund enjoys his new (temporary) life in New York, he has missed one thing this fall/winter: watching Patrick race cyclocross! Lucky for him, Patrick brought cyclocross to Staten Island. Unlike Portland, NYC is a bit more strict when it comes to sweet pugs on public transportation. Dogs have to be in an enclosed carrier. We fudged a bit - Sigmund was slightly enclosed, but cute enough to get his usual "ooohhs" and "aaahhhs" during our trip to Tompkins Square.

Sigmund wasn't too impressed by the digs. Check out his examination of this annoying Boston Terrier. Sigmund's looking at him like, "You're not The Senator."

We did have a celebrity dog sighting. Parker Posey and her pooch were there!

One sunny Sunday afternoon, Sigmund convinced me to forego studying for a little exercise. We hoped on the "Amsterdam" and set out on what I THOUGHT would be a 2 hour. As I pedaled down the path along the Hudson, listening to everyone oh and awe over Sigmund sitting in his bike basket, I failed to realize how far we had gone. Our trek took us from Columbia University at 114th... all the way down the island.... around the bottom... all the way back up the other side... over trough Central Park and back. Sigmund was so annoyed from sitting in that basket for 4 HOURS, he finally just laid down and fell asleep, which I promptly did when we finally made it home!

Patrick discovered Manzanita along the Oregon Coast, so we decided to spend one of our last weekends home with our feet in the sand.

Good things come from the Portland Farmers Market, including little things for pugs! It's a pig snout! GROSS! I made Patrick carry it home, this reformed vegetarian couldn't even touch it! Sigmund LOVED it and devoured it in about 10 minutes. YUCK!

Our generous friends, the Butlers, invited us to utilize their cabin at the base of Mount Hood this weekend. As the boys rode a 100 mile bike ride, the ladies (and Sigmund) set off on a hike. This is overlooking the Hood River... and that's Sigmund sneaking under a rock for a little shade.

sigmund is no longer a puppy. He turned 3 today!

His birthday started out a bit rough: He refused to do his business and ran across a busy street to chase some birds. I think he was acting out because I forgot it was his birthday! That said - I still adore him and can't imagine what my life was like three years ago... I must have been so bored!
